The Conneaut Arts Center prides itself on having a strong, diverse dance department with ages ranging from 3 years old through adult. We provide classes in pre-ballet—ballet 4, pointe, beginning-advanced jazz, musical theatre jazz, acting, improv, and hip-hop. We train strong and artistic dancers with several alumni continuing their education professionally. We have several performance opportunities per year for our dancers; the prominent performances happen in the winter and spring.
In December of 2018, the Arts Center had a brand-new, state-of-the-art Harlequin dance floor installed in the upstairs dance studio. We received a grant from the Ashtabula Foundation but also held several fundraisers to raise money. In October of 2018, we hosted an all-day Dance-a-Thon with guest teachers and our entire dance department! The day consisted of 30-minute increments with sponsors that could donate either a lump sum or donate for each 30-minute block of time their dancer participated in.
Our dancers have so many opportunities to grow as artists and dancers at the Conneaut Arts Center. The teachers are dedicated and passionate about strong technique and artistry and push dancers to keep reaching out. Our dancers attend master classes, auditions, and have even performed in Cleveland at Playhouse Square!
From the director of our dance department and the dancers that performed:
"I don’t know if you heard the news, but even if you have, it bears repeating: this summer, five of our dancers had the privilege of performing on stage at Playhouse Square! Skyla Bowers, Ella Dewey, Rowan Dewey, Jordan Novitsky, and Adele Wade traveled to Cleveland at the end of July to be a part of the last day of the American Dance Festival and danced a piece from our 2017 dance show Twisted Tales. Only ten video entries from all over northeast Ohio were selected to be a part of this Student Showcase which was presented at the Allen Theatre where so many professional dancers have previously performed. And if that weren’t enough good news, they also had the opportunity to take part in free master dance classes with dance company artistic directors and college professors of dance. I am so grateful for this stunning opportunity, and I am so proud of these girls for all the hard work and dedication they have shown for their art form. They earned every wonderful moment of that day and performed beautifully. Ah, but enough talking...it’s time to get back to the studio!" -Tessa Deutsch
From the dancers:
“I couldn’t believe it when Tessa told us we were actually going to perform at Playhouse Square! I feel so proud that our hard work and love for dance got us all the way to Cleveland. The whole day was filled with dance classes, a professional development session, and of course the performances at the end! It was mind-blowing to me that we got to dance on a stage where professional dancers have performed and then to end an already perfect day, we were fortunate enough to see a professional dance show. Overall, it was an incredible experience and I will always treasure the memory!” -Jordan Novitsky
“When we were told that we were auditioning, I thought it was going to be fun. I didn’t think we were going to win at all. When she told us we won, it felt unreal. I was super excited because this was such a big event!” -Skyla Bowers
“My favorite class was by far the contemporary class. It was like nothing I have done before. It was so fun and I enjoyed the teacher a lot! It was overall such a spectacular experience!” -Rowan Dewey
"I truly can not just pick one favorite thing about that day. It was just all over an amazing experience. Being from a small town, we don’t get many opportunities to showcase our talent; the classes were absolutely amazing, we got to meet new people, and honestly being able to attend Playhouse is an amazing experience I won’t forget!” -Ella Dewey
"Going to Playhouse Square was an amazing experience! When Tessa told us we made it, I couldn't believe it. My friends and I were so lucky to be able to perform on an amazing stage together. The masterclasses were amazing and I learned so much. From taking the masterclasses to performing, going to Playhouse Square is something I'll never forget." -Addy Wade
